Math Dictionary

Dictionaries often give you the description or meaning of a word that doesn’t sound familiar to you. Some words or terms in math are highly technical for they are frequently used in the higher classes in math.

Many of these terms come from the area of conic sections. An “ellipse” is the locus of points on a plane where the sum of the distances from any point on the curve to two fixed points called foci is constant. On the other hand, a “parabola” can be defined as locus of points in a plane which are equidistant from a given point called focus and a given value known as directrix. Meanwhile, a “hyperbola” may be described as the locus of points where the difference in the distance to the foci is constant.

In addition, words from the area of calculus may really sound fuzzy because of its complexity. Some of which is “derivative” which means the instantaneous rate of change of a function. Also, the term “Riemann sum” refers to a method for approximating the values of integrals or the integration operation that can also be usedd in this topic.

In geometry, some figures are named technically. A “chiliagon” is a polygon with 1,000 sides and an “Octakaideacagon” is a polygon with 18 sides. These words are just a few of millions of many hard-to-define words in the very exciting field of numbers.

It is amazing that mathematics offers these words that sound very unfamiliar to us. This just means that what we know isn’t enough. We shall read more and learn more.
