Everyday Math Shortcuts

Math shortcuts are a set of techniques that can allow you to solve math problems faster and easier than using conventional solutions. These math shortcuts were developed from the same solutions, but the people who designed such math shortcuts have found ways and means that could hasten the entire process.

A good example of a math shortcut is the short division process. This is a 4th grade level math shortcut, and it is intended to provide students with a means to learn the basic concept of 1-digit division. It also helps students avoid any confusion that can be acquired from going through the long division process. This math shortcut makes students initially focus on the digit that will be divided by another digit. If a remainder is present, the student can focus on dividing the remainder by the other digit. If succeeding remainders are present, the student can divide the remainders one at a time.

For instance, 7 divided by 3 can be solved using the short division process. First, the student will have no difficulty in calculating 7 divided by 3 = 2. Afterwards, the student will find it easy to determine that there is a remainder equivalent to 1. If the student wants to break the remainder even more by dividing it with 3, the answer would be 3. Afterwards, the student will get 1 as the succeeding remainder. After repeating the short division process, the student will understand that 1 keeps on popping up as the remainder of the succeeding division equations. With this, the student would have learnt the concept of repeating decimals. Thus, the final answer would be 2.33, in which the digits after the decimal point are usually labeled with a bar on top of it in order to identify it as repeating digits. Otherwise, the student can even round off the rightmost digit after the decimal point to the digit right after the decimal point, where he or she get 2.3 as the answer to 7 divided by 3.
